MOROCCO 2015

Together with my good friend Albert Aixás, last 4th April we left from Barcelona to Marrakech, "tamurt n Akkuc", which means "land of God" in Bereber. Once we arrived we joined to a part of the members of the team that UR Nomade expeditions company  joined for this adventure. This fact allowed us to record the expedition with full imatge and video quality, with the target of record the best moments of the second expedition to the Assif Melloul gorges, the White River.
After negotiate with the Taxis for a while, we travel to "le relais de Marrakech" camping, where we met Txus with the rest of the UR Nomade team members. We spend the night there and the next day we continue the way across inhospitable roads of this fabulous country during 5 hours. We travel trough magnific landscape and Bereber villages, which impressed me so much. We drove to the Cathedral Rock, a big rock formation located in the Natural reserve of Tamga, where UR Nomade has the basecamp for expeditions. There we could use jaimas and enjoy the nice company of a group of locals dedicated to facilitate our stay. Once there we runned the first section of Ahanesal and we all were surprised by the volume of water that the river carried, that drove us so fast and funny enjoying the big waves sorrounded by the vertical walls of the canyon. We finished almost night and Mostapha Outili, a local friend member of UR team, was waiting for us at the take out to carry us to the basecamp. At this moment, we realized that without a good logistics that facilitates the transfers and approaches is difficult to explore this country.

Next morning, after breakfast with Msaman, a puff pastry bread typical of Morocco, we went to paddle the Ahanesal river, a total of 6 hours of descent between the big and majestic walls until the "Bin el Ouidane" lake, a descent far from any road or civilization. There, a barge toke us to the shore and we met Mostapha to return again to our basecamp. We ate rice with chiken cooked with "Tajine", one of the most typical instruments used by berebers for the stew elaboration. That night Txus told us how it was going to be the logistics for the next days to prepare the adventure to the gorges of Assif Melloul.

The day after,  we took a mountain road to IMICHIL village, located at the heart of Atlas, about 2000 meters of altitude. We spend all day traveling and use the night and the next day to make some tourism around that area, find the put in of the river Assif Melloul, and know the curiosities and history of this region. The name of IMICHIL village is attributed to an ancient legend in which two lovers could not marry because they were of different tribes and families hated. Desperate and sad, the lovers cried for themselves and the tears continued day and night until they created two rivers of tears and finally they drowned there themselves. Since that day, all young people in the area are free to choose their partners without recourse to ancient rituals of arranged marriages. Thus the annual Imichil festival of Berebers wifes takes place, at the top of Lake Plateau, in the middle of the mountains, where every September after harvest arrive young people from AIt Haddidou.

Finally arrived the day to start our expedition during three days in the river.  After prepare all the equipment, around 6am we left to the small town of Oulgazi, where we went to start the expedition. There, part of the team took the equipment that we couldn't put in the kayaks and the other members started the descent.

After run 30km with some fright, we finally arrived to Batli, a little isolated town where the only access was by foot (or river!!). This made the place so nice and authentic. We were very well received and spend the night there in a local house.
The next day we left early to Energí, a bigger village. There was market day and we all were surprised by the people that had come to visit it. After lunch, we paddled the 40km left of the journey until arrive at the basecamp of the Cathedral.

The next day we continue kayaking and some of us went to the upper part of Ahanesal river, a deep spectacular canyon. We had to take care because of the awesome water volume and the absence of eddies. It was again a great and unforgettable experience.

At the afternoon, almost without time we headed back to Marrakech for last day and go home the next morining.
